etting new music to explore is always a good thing. As a reviewer, you can be somewhat prepared for what you're about to hear after reading the one sheet. The information in a one sheet is usually pretty useful, but no matter how good the writing is, it's not sufficient.
Peter Novelli is a blues artist, but there are a lot of facets to his music that you won't necessarily gather from reading a one sheet or a bio. It is definitely blues, but it has a fair amount of Louisiana influence, which might be due to the appearance of Sonny Landreth as a guest on the track. The Louisiana influence is more overt in a couple other songs. One of those songs is "Je ne sais quoi." In addition to Novelli singing some French lyrics in the song, it also features some zydeco accordion that is sure to get you moving. A song that is even surer to get you moving is the closer "Zydeco Ride." This is a song that brings to mind some of the greats like Buckwheat Zydeco. The whole song is uptempo, with a beat that drives the song and an infectious accordion part - played by Chubby Carrier, who is no stranger to good-time music (for a good example, check out his album Ain't No Party like a Chubby Party). This one might just make you want to spread some salt on your hardwood floors so it's easier to glide around while you're dancing.
Another facet of the album that doesn't necessarily show up in any one sheet is the funky sounds of this band. The best example is "Boudin" that has a bass line that is sure to get you moving your backside.
This band moves pretty easily between a variety of styles - even from one song to the next. "Spirit Passing By" is the kind of blues groove that you would expect from ZZ Top. Even the vocals bring to mind some ZZ Top tunes like "My Head's in Mississippi."
Novelli is a talented songwriter who obviously has no interest in making an entire album full of songs that sound alike. St. Amant Sessions has everything you could want in an album: blues, zydeco, funk, guest musicians, and songs that will get you moving. Sure, this would have been a great album to add you your Mardi Gras playlist, but you can put this album on any time you want to have some good-time music. ~By Gary Schwind
