It's taken a long time for Crooked Saws to record their second album. Death stood in the way. A week after their debut album, Mo'Fi, was released on Lyric Left Records, singer and guitarist Jesse Damien Revel almost died. Perforated intestines, several emergency surgeries, sepsis, pulmonary emboli...death came knocking loud and in as serious a way as it can.
A month in the hospital (the last week of which was learning how to walk up stairs again), another five months of recovery at home and a year with a colostomy bag punctuated by another surgery was all that hindered touring behind their first album and the recording of their second. Despite this, Jesse says, "Mo'Fi did really well. People keep telling me they love it and one of the singles made it onto Showtime's show Shameless. That's pretty cool."
And the critics agree. Crooked Saws' music has been described as the best qualities of "Monster Magnet drug by David Lynch through the finest mid-western mud." "Grit" and "dirt," "raw" and "soul" are words regularly employed to paint a picture of their sound. From the deepest roots of the blues, of hill and mountain music, to the modern thunder of guitar and drums played hard and loud, Crooked Saws is "a two-piece powerhouse to which you can't stop listening."
Now they've begun recording their follow-up album tentatively titled Raw. About it Jesse says, "This album is so many years in the making and, if ever there was one, an album born of hardship. This album is both proof, and a celebration, of life."
