Release Info: Funkadelic - The Best of Funkadelic 1976 - 1981
This 1994 Charly best-of functioned sufficiently for its time, but the label ultimately trumped it by releasing The Very Best of Funkadelic a few years a later, a double-disc collection that features everything here plus more. Besides just having twice the material, The Very Best of Funkadelic also featured a version of "Maggot Brain" and the full-length version of "(Not Just) Knee Deep." In sum, it's worth the extra money. In support of Best of Funkadelic (1976-1981) though, the collection does live up to its name, featuring all the mandatory moments from the four latter-day Warner albums. The album's primary flaw lies in its struggle to cram as many songs on the CD as possible, resulting in a highly edited version of "(Not Just) Knee Deep" that comes nowhere near approaching the original 15-minute version in terms of power or scope. Furthermore, the album also truncates "Uncle Jam," but this may arguably be a bonus since the song isn't one of the group's better moments. Get either The Very Best of Funkadelic if you can find it or go for one of the Funk Gets Stronger best-ofs, which are available in either double-disc or single-disc formats. In fact, it might be a good idea to just go for the LPs, starting with One Nation Under a Groove and then Hardcore Jollies. Chances are that a best-of will only make you hungry for more.
