Theory is back after a break over the summer with a stormer of a release from a legend of the techno scene, Scotland's Stephen Brown! "Fuego" utilizes ethnic flute sounds but, typically, mangles and twists them into something altogether other-worldly and futuristic (until squashing the whole thing under a filter and flattening it into a bassline). After dropping the kick and allowing the groove to settle some highly syncopated stabs and hi-hat rhythms jostle for position, making for a heavy dancing workout on the floor as you try to match the rhythms with your body. One of those drum heavy techno joints that rock a floor, think Shake Shakir or Kenny Larkin mid-session. "Polar" is the second OG from Brown. A growling bassline kicks things off, but again we are treated to some sophisticated question-answer syncopation between the drums, bassline and melody fragments. It's a highly rhythmic workout with Mr. Brown and that's how we like it! He almost touches on micro-house (remember Akufen?) with his clever, intricate mini-sample use; but ramps the whole thing up to a chugging techno pace! On the flip we get Ben Sims' take on the two tracks. His version of "Polar" is relentless and aggressive, and you can imagine the strobe being on max for the full duration of the track. Sims' easily identifiable techy stabs littering the track before tough, one-the-one hand claps come in making for a rampant, hard European groove (sex music). Finally he works "Fuego" into a concentric, demonized monster. Turning the flutey bass riff into a distorted lead line and again, adding one-the-one hand claps and dirty snares he changes the dynamics from hypnotic rhythms to an all-out techno stomp! Early DJ support & positive feedback from: Rolando, Ben Klock, Francois k, DVS1, A Made Up Sound, Kenny Larkin + many more.
