Release Info: Lainie Kazan - Lainie Kazan (1966)
As histrionic divas go, Lainie Kazan is 'A' class. Kazan has a throaty belting voice that can soar into a window-rattling soprano -- and she has little or no restraint. On this self-titled opus, Kazan is abetted by Don Costa, who must have LOVED histrionic divas as much as I do. The manner in which Kazan skyrockets over the top on Lainie Kazan makes Morgana King and Eydie Gorme sound like Doris Day. So there's lots of good stuff to choose from. In homage to her idol, Judy Garland, Lainie melds her rollicking take on "The Trolley Song" with a verse from "Gotta Have Me Go With You" from the movie 'A Star Is Born.' "Can I Trust You?" starts softly and builds to a gargantuan, belting climax. Lainie only falters on "I Loves You Porgy". While her overripe take on "My Man's Gone Now" on Right Now! was scary and fun, "Porgy" demands restraint and well ... it is Lainie Kazan, after all. "Summertime" fares better. Other highlights are "I Will Wait For You" and "Show Me".
