The stomping beats of the first track, "Mockingbird," begin and all my predispositions about this young blues-folk singer disappear. Yeah, Jonah Tolchin is young but goodness he is talented. At the young age of 15 he wrote his first album, Criminal Man, at age 19 he played Newport Folk Festival, and at 21 he is now releasing his sophomore album, Clover Lane with Yep Rec (his first for the label) - but he doesn't believe age matters. In an interview with Grassclippings, he says he doesn't believe in age but, "[is] a believer in soul-age. Birth certificate-age is something for governments and society. I beleive that a 6 year-old can be wiser than a 60 year old. It really depends on the person."

That soul-age can be see on Clover Lane, as topics range from the repetitive nature of everyday life ("21st Century Girl"), a happy go-lucky love song ("Midnight Rain"), and maintaining his soul as he becomes more successful ("Mansion in Hollywood"). Tolchin takes influence from all over - in track, "Atlantic Wind" I could hear the influences of his ancestors of blues-folk - Cash, Nelson, Guthrie, King - his uses these influences but still creates something entirely his and new. Clover Lane got it's name from Tolchin's hometown road (mine's 'Highland Road' and just doesn't sound as good!) but both are located in New Jersey.

When it all boiled down, the reason that Tolchin was able to make this record was because of Anna Serridge, a friend of record producer Marvin Etzioni who had lived in the same very house on Clover Lane and had sold it to Tolchin's parents 16 years earlier (Yep Roc Records). Produced by Etzioni, this album also features Deer Tick's John McCauley, Los Lobos' Steve Berlin, Chris Scruggs, Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson's band), and more. There's something so effortless about the record.

As each track flows into each other, one can just imagine themselves sitting on a porch overlooking the water, a whiskey in hand, and the slow tunes of "Diamond Mind," playing behind them. One of the slower tracks on the album, Tolchin's rough deep voice flows effortlessly over the simple haunting chords. Tolchin's favorite, he said he was watching his future fiance play with her one year old nephew and knew he was going to marry her, "The song started out as a stream of consciousness as I was staring out of the window in Rhode Island...I ran out to the road, picked some tall-grass, wove a ring...a few minutes later I drove her out to a tunnel of trees and proposed."

The entire album is a flawless, well-executed remembrance and tribute to old blues and American folk, filled with refreshing exuberance. (by Cassandra Chernin)
