A native of Kentucky, you might be wondering about the last name that Bobby has. Well, yes, he is related to Flatwoods favorite son, Billy Ray Cyrus. The two are cousins, and there are times that you can definitely hear the family resemblance from a vocal standpoint. But, as where Billy Ray is at his best when he lets his rockin side show through, Bobby is quite at home with a more traditional sound where this album excels the most.
You get the first taste of what he is made of with the nostalgic sounds os Cut My Teeth On (Waylon and Willie), which opens up this album. He definitely knows how to handle an up tempo song, as he does on Hillbilly Man and Milkmans Eyes, which features that other Cyrus. But, as stated earlier, what really struck me was Bobbys way of handling a ballad.
Homeplace is a very touching performance, paying tribute to the Cyruss way of life, while the piano sets the mood for a stunning vocal job on Send Me Wings. One of his biggest musical influences, Tom T. Hall, shows up on the Storyteller-written A Rose For Marie, which is a highlight, as is his heartbreaking Carved Our Names In Stone. But, perhaps, the creme de la creme comes with the true-to-life Broke Down In Georgia. Have you ever wondered if the writers (in this case, Mickey Cates and Tony Ramey) have been looking at your life This brings back too many memories of Interstate 16 and Highway 1 for comfort, but music is meant to affect you, and this definitely does.
Bobby Cyrus has put together a disc that shows many musical sides, with him excelling at each. Give this one a chance. Youll be glad you did!
