Pentangle - History Book [1972, Vinyl] MP3/Flac

An excellent introduction to this fine British band. For those unfamiliar with the group, they came from the duo of Burt Jansch and John Renbourne, easily two of the finest acoustic guitarists in the land in the early to mid-'60s. Jansch and Renbourne were eventually joined by Jacqui McShee, a highly accomplished singer, and rounded out by Danny Thompson and Terry Cox, one of the finest rhythm sections ever. The group tackled just about everything in their brilliant career, and this collection has a little bit of everything. Opening with a couple of early Renbourne/Jansch duo tracks, the collection continues with some early collaborations with McShee, and then moves into material from the Pentangle. Some of the high points are the wicked jazz waltz of "Train Song" and an unlikely (but amazing) cover of the pop hit "Sally Go 'Round the Roses," which goes to prove just what these great musicians were capable of. Excellent. [AMG]
