Natalie Cole began her career seeking to distinguish herself from the music of her late father, Nat "King" Cole. Her earlier music was contemporary R&B and pop, and she achieved five R&B chart-toppers between 1975 and 1979, as well as four gold and two platinum-selling albums. After overcoming drug problems in the early 80s, she returned with a willingness to acknowledge her father's musical legacy: the double platinum Everlasting (1987) included a cover of his signature song "When I Fall In Love". Her most successful album was Unforgettable… With Love (1991), an album of Nat King Cole covers. By sampling her father's vocals and singing around them on the title track, Natalie was seemingly able to duet with her late father. "Unforgettable" won Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the Grammys, while the album won the coveted Album of the Year award, and sold over seven million copies in the US alone. Cole continued to record smooth jazz-influenced pop albums, and enjoyed a brief renaissance when "Livin' For Love" topped the US Dance chart in 2000.
